Health Aide
Purpose Statement
The job of HEALTH AIDE is done for the purpose/s of The job of HEALTH AIDE is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the school site operations by administering first aid and dispensing medications under the direction of a health care professional; coordinating with other personnel in supporting students with health needs ;documenting activities in accordance with established guidelines and/or regulatory requirements; assisting healthcare professionals in conducting prescribed health screenings and services; and, creating and maintaining updated and accurate records.
Essential Functions
Administers emergency first aid to students, under the direction of a health professional, scheduled medications and specialized treatments for the purpose of meeting immediate health care needs for ill, injured and/or medically fragile students.
Assists health professionals in completing health screenings (e.g. vision/hearing, growth and development, etc.) for the purpose of identifying health concerns, scheduling dental services, and/or delivering school health services in compliance with established guidelines.
Assists staff with basic first aid or minor health needs (e.g. band aids, aspirin, etc.) for the purpose of providing staff with non-emergent health care.
Attends meetings, workshops, and seminars as assigned for the purpose of gathering or conveying information.
Cleans work areas (e.g. sinks, counters, laundry, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and sanitary work environment.
Communicates with parents, students, health care providers, and/or public agencies for the purpose of promoting needed treatment and/or complying with legal requirements.
Distributes information on a variety of health subjects (e.g. lice, ringworm, drug prevention, personal hygiene, etc.) for the purpose of providing instructional materials to teachers, students, and/or parents.
Maintains inventory of medications, first aid items, and office supplies for the purpose of ensuring items availability as needed.
Maintains student health informational records (e.g. prescription dispensing log, medical emergency cards, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by regulatory requirements
Monitors students referred to the health room for the purpose of ensuring student and staff safety and/or referring to a medical professional for review and/or services.
Performs procedures for students as directed by a licensed health care professional (e.g. feeding tubes, catheterization, toileting plans, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for medically fragile students.
Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. data entry of medical alert status, immunization records, withdrawing students, answering calls, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining health services activities and providing current and accurate records.
Reports suspected child or substance abuse as required by law for the purpose of maintaining students' personal safety and positive learning environment, and adhering to regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
Responds to emergencies or potential emergencies for the purpose of ensuring safety of students and/or personnel, taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns, assisting on-site School Nurse with relevant information or follow-up actions as may be required.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent's, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: CPR, first aid, and AED equipment; health and safety regulations; applicable laws, rules, and regulations; computer knowledge and related pertinent software; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; educational and medical terminology; standard office equipment; relevant terminology, procedures, and operations; current office practices; and, telephone etiquette and techniques.
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: maintaining accurate and current records, interpreting, applying, and conveying applicable laws, codes, rules, and regulations; and, utilizing interpersonal skills with tact, patience, and courtesy.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating effectively orally and in writing; establishing and maintaining effective work relationships; working with frequent interruptions; working with minimal supervision; maintaining confidentiality; organizing work; meeting schedules and timelines; preparing and maintaining files; interacting effectively and respectfully with students, families, and staff; and, maintaining consistent, punctual attendance.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization’s services.
Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 30% sitting, 35% walking, 35% standing. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Experience: Job related experience is required.
Education (Preferred): First Aid/CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain and maintain, state or national certification in a health care occupation
Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
